From CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY art classes

Christmas Creativity Classes – two wonderful venues!

I don’t know why, but for some reason every year, Christmas tends to sneak up on me….

It could be the enthusiastic flutter into spring or the crazy-buzz of end of school year, but I seem to feel it comes racing at me with ever-increasing speed each year.

And I long to choose to be mindful and put the brakes on to remember gratitude.

…For my family and our peaceful home.

…For my children’s future looking bright when so many don’t have that luxury.

In our home, we often gather around creativity in order to slow.

Making things with busy and intentional hands, allows room for hearts to be full of love + gratitude. A gift thoughtfully made gives so much more than just the object.

If you are like me and want to make the choice to slow and be mindful, can I invite you to join us at our Creativity Workshops – two locations this year!

Riverbend Books and Cafe have been such an incredible supporter of local community and mindfulness – we just adore running classes in this beautiful store!

A new inner-west venue for WEAVE+WONDER is the gorgeous gift + design store OneGirlStudio in Graceville. We have recently completed term time Architecture + Design classes for children and students are eagerly awaiting more Christmas-creativity!

Again this year, we are offering classes over two weeks to accommodate private and state school finish times – please choose a class that suits you! These are Christmas-time favourites and even if you have joined us for a similar class in years gone by, these treasures make wonderful gifts and we will include new colours + materials.

We can’t wait to share creative time with your children this Christmas and help them to craft handmade gifts of love to treasure!

new Christmas creativity class – ply ornaments

It was a summer evening filled with Christmas joy and community sharing, and we had loads of fun at the Martha Street Precinct street party last week.  We painted and chatted with beautiful children, all keen to put their own creative mark on our blank ply ornaments.

These little ply lovelies were such a hit we have decided to add a ply ornament class to our Teenie and Tiny school holiday lineup for others who would like to paint our unique ornaments!

Join us and paint three of these lovely decorations to give as gifts or to decorate your tree.  In this class for 5-12 year olds, students will learn painting techniques including masking, and be able to experiment with combinations of bright and metallic colours.  And like all of our Teenie and Tiny classes this year, younger children are welcome to attend with an accompanying adult to give them a little bit of extra assistance.

We do hope you will join us on Monday 15 December at Teenie and Tiny, Camp Hill for this afternoon class.  Booking information here.

A mindful Christmas!

There are so many pressures and marketing ploys coming at us at Christmas time that I often feel overwhelmed with the amount of choice and am tempted to lose the ability to mindfully choose gifts!

We have enjoyed slowly selecting, designing and creating products with gift-giving in mind this year as it has given us opportunity to consider

the maker….

the budget….

.the sustainability…

of the items we offer for sale and gift ourselves!

We can’t wait to use our new ply ornaments in our upcoming market and gift proceeds to NEVERTHIRST in Cambodia.

We envisage our timeless leather stars adorning gifts + being stitched and created into gorgeous Christmas Ornaments in our Riverbend Classes.

Our fabric wrap is a well considered item as a ‘gift that keeps on giving’ and we imagine countless ongoing uses for the luscious layers of charcoal and stone.

Our fabric pages texturally convey a message of love that can be framed and enjoyed as a work of art on your wall.

And oh! The stunning floaty-scarf goodness is highest on my to-gift-list for all its textural loveliness and all the ways we imagine this totable fabric can be used.

If you are looking for soul-filled natural and textural gifts this Christmas, you might like to take a peek in our etsy store. We do so hope you find the perfect gift for a loved one or two in there…..

Christmas classes at Teenie and Tiny

There is nothing more exciting around Christmas time than getting lost in a whimsical gift store dreaming of handcrafted, natural toys + books and who might receive the loveliness!

While you browse and dream, shop and plan, we would love to create with your children!

We have two afternoon classes scheduled for Teenie and Tiny this year these are as follows:

‘Alexander Calder inspired wire hanging stars’ workshop

Thursday 11 December, 2.30-3.30pm.

These simple yet gorgeously tactile wire stars make a wonderful hanging garland for Christmas. Children will learn how to manipulate wire to create their stars.

Alexander Calder was an American sculptor and artist most famous for inventing mobile sculptures. Inspired by his most famous works and using wire + wool, Children will create their own hanging stars.

PLEASE NOTE: This class is for 5-12 year olds, however younger children are more than welcome to attend this class under the supervision of an adult.

Fabric and feather Christmas angels

Tuesday 16th December, 2.30-3.30pm.

Using the lovely texture of feathers, white + vintage fabrics, children will create ‘light + floaty’ hanging angels to decorate their home this Christmas! We will visit the stunning nativity story illustrated by Julie Vivas.

Riverbend Christmas Creativity returns!

With warm tactile leather + fabric alongside sustainable design processes, we are proud to present a fresh new take on Christmas decorating!

Of course, these are first and foremost children’s classes and so we are excited to jump into the wonderful world of artistic inspiration from the famous Alexander Calder on through other screen printing + fibre artists. From this inspiration we have developed skills-based classes that are fresh and contemporary!

For the first time this year, we are offering an ADULT CREATIVITY CLASS and also a PARENT+CHILD CLASS! In these classes, you are able to choose the project you would like to complete – please read the class description carefully and leave your selection in the comments section of your booking.

Alexander Calder was an American sculptor known as the originator of the mobile, a type of kinetic sculpture made with delicately balanced or suspended components which move in response to motor power or air currents. Calder’s stationary sculptures are called stables. He also produced numerous wire figures.

Using inspiration from Calder’s work, we will experiment with the wire medium to form 3D shapes. We will use these twisting+bending techniques to create a unique Christmas-inspired wreath form. Calder also added solid forms to his mobiles for counterbalance. We will look at ways to weave gorgeous leather + fabric leaves into our wreath-sculpture for a truly stunning result! The perfect marriage of art + craft for Christmas!

Each student will create 1 wreath in this class.

Oh soft caramel leather you truly make us weak at the knees! Students will engage with the slow art of hand stitching to create these beautiful leather + fabric ornaments or gift tags.

These are a beautiful layered addition to your tree, a hanging garland or a unique handmade gift tag. Students will choose and cut fabric stars from our beautiful selection of handwoven + naturally dyed fabric and accented with vibrant felt in Christmas green to layer behind their leather stars! The sparkling bronze adds a festive touch as the students thread + stitch their fabric soft sculpture together!

Each student will create 3 stars within this class.

This year we are excited to announce a class with a sustainable message!

WEAVE+WONDER are proudly offering the gorgeous naturally dyed and handwoven fabric sourced from traditional weaving families in rural Cambodia. As we introduce this gorgeous fabric into the Australian market, we are motived toward sustainable uses for it. We couldn’t think of a better beginning than using custom sized pieces as fabric wrapping for Christmas!

In our printing class, we will learn simple printing, stamping + stencilling techniques and work on pattern repeat in order to create unique designs for our fabric wrapping. We will use humble brown paper also as a ‘test run’ for our fabric pieces but also as useful wrapping in itself!

Students will print 1 large fabric wrapping sheet (can be used as two smaller sheets) as well as significant length of custom printed wrapping paper.

There will be additional fabric wrapping sheets available to purchase in all classes.

Its that frenzied time of year where christmas traditions blend with class-craziness and making+multiples are the order (or chaos!) of my household! Thought I’d share with you just a few snaps of our everyday….you can also follow along on instagram too if you like @mguyatt.

:: These sweet little crochet vessels above continue my growing thread of experimentation with different sizes + materials. These are perfect for your dresser or bedside table when you take your small jewelery off for bed! I made an armful for lovely friends as a wee Christmas gift.

:: Ahh, Juniper….my fragrant, REAL tree friend! Ever since experiencing the real-tree-deal in Europe many years ago, I just can’t reconsile with the faux tree. And as it is so HOT here, cut tree’s don’t arrive till quite close to the big day – no where near early enough for my enthusiastic children! Our compromise this year is to fill our home with small, sweet smelling Juniper tree’s! To bend their tender boughs with homemade decorating goodness – fingerknitted garlands, felt baubles, fabric angels, clay ornaments….sigh!

:: This year our front porch is screened with these beauties, handmade in white + soft grey by my wee ones! I love how they dance in the summer breezes.

:: A few oversize crochet vessels have found their way to new homes to contain ornaments, keys, hamper goodies, such a versatile little gift this one!

:: this turned out to be the repurposed craft of the season this year – a wonderful use for those cardboard rolls that clog up the recycling bin (or they do ours with a houseful of girls!)

:: Much, much doodling is going on here in preparation for beautiful decorations to be made in our classes + on stones to be given as gifts

:: and yes, the multiples….taking over many corners of our small home as I sort, prepare + pack kits

:: I do love the sense of anticipation that whispers through all this chaos, of wonderful children about to stretch their creative minds!

:: counting down to this readiness next week….the fresh, airy quasi-studio space that is the undercroft of Riverbend Books and Teahouse! Hope to see you there xx
